Earlier this week I went to check out the new Japanese restaurant Mt. Fuji (Consumer Square Plaza- next to the Verizon store). I’m a big fan of Japanese food so I’ve been pretty pumped about this place ever since the sign went up. I’m not sure exactly when they opened, but it may have been this week. We got a 10% discount for the “grand opening.”

I wasn’t expecting a full Japanese restaurant, but they had it all. There was a Habachi (cooking at the table, throwing knives in the air, fire tricks, the whole shebang), a Sushi Bar, and regular dining areas. We went for the regular dining area, so I’ll save sushi bar and hibachi reviews for later (there was plenty of “oooos and ahhhhs” coming from the hibachi area).

The inside is nice and decorated with traditional art. But what will put you in their seats is the menu.  5 Soups, 4 Salads, and over 20 appetizers start off the menu; the majority of those items in the $4-$6 range. Their lunch menu looks to have great deals as well, with most full lunches around $9, and including soup, salad, rice, and a California roll.

We went for dinner and there were plenty of choices (mostly in the $15-$25 range). The sushi bar is pretty limitless on what they can produce. If your new to Sushi, get a Roll or Special Roll (they all sound awesome and most are with cooked fish or veggies). My girlfriend ordered a Sweet Heart Roll and a Philadelphia Roll (top photo). They were great. There’s nothing better than fresh sushi after biting the bullet and going with the rolls at Wegmans (which aren’t horrible). The Philly Roll at Fuji is salmon w/ cream cheese (pretty standard, but I’ve also seen crab w/ cream cheese, which I prefer).  The Sweat Heart Roll is crab, avocado, and cucumber with spicy tuna on top. That was awesome and my girlfriend wasn’t too keen on sharing. She’s gets defensive around food. Don’t tell her I said that.

Since I was still fighting a cold, I went with the Tempura Udon (above). It was much bigger than I was expecting. So big that it came with 2 bowls; one to keep it hot and one to refill and eat out of (not in photo).  Udon are thick noodles and in a broth with spices and some veggies. The tempura were served on the side and consisted of fried veggies and a couple fried shrimp.  This was a great deal, especially since it ended up being 2 meals (it also came with a salad). It may be that I had a cold, but the soup could have been a bit spicier (I like a lot of spice). The tempura (or the tempura sauce) was sweeter than I’m used to, but I liked it a lot.

I also learned a few tips. Hot tea was free (or maybe they just forgot to charge us). Also, I heard another table order Habachi items, so you don’t actually have to sit at the Habachi to order it. I’ll be back for sure. Maybe I’ll bring a few friends and we’ll split the $99 Sushi & Shashimi Boat (20 pieces sushi, 32 pieces sashimi, 1 dragon roll, 1 California roll, 1 rainbow roll, and 1 shrimp tempura roll). Anyone interested?
