Market St Newbs: There is a Japanese lunch spot in Corning – Bento Ya Masako (meaning Masako’s Lunch). When I first moved here it was months before I actually found it. Then again, I often go about my daily life quite oblivious to my surroundings.

It’s a bit easier to locate now; a sidewalk sign leads the way. If you haven’t seen it, that may be because it’s only open 4 days a week (Tuesday – Friday) during lunch hours (11 – 3), it’s behind a small door, up a flight of old stairs, and in a converted apartment. [clear]

Yakisoba Yakitori

The emphasis here is on food. While the walls may need a paint job, the seating is thrown together, and there’s a hole in the bathroom wall labeled “bird hole, do not plug” (via rumor), if a top secret Japanese restaurant seems cool to you, you probably won’t mind that it’s quirky. Perhaps like me, you prefer it.

There are about 13 lunch options, from tempura to sushi, all homemade in the open kitchen. My most ordered item is Tempura… or maybe Yakitori (chicken kabob). My favorite item is the #10 – order it sometime when you’re really really hungry, it’s $13!  Most  meals are in the $8 range. The Tea is free (soda and bottled water available). You will leave full![clear]
