Tony R’s Steak and Seafood sits stoically on the corner of Market St and Pine St smack in the middle of downtown Corning, NY. It’s a relatively new establishment (2008) providing the city with a fine dining experience. The menu features steaks, seafood, pastas, ribs, salads, soup, a variety of sides and appetizers to share with your table, and an extensive wine list.

Lets start with the French Onion Soup… Tony R’s simply has the best French Onion Soup your going to find. It’s big enough for two, and the flavor is out of this world. I get this every time I go. In fact, I will probably go just for the soup someday for lunch (I haven’t been here for lunch yet). They also have a Lobster Bisque, which I’m sure is also great, but have yet to try it because I love the French Onion so much.

Maybe it goes without saying, and I don’t order steak at restaurants very often, but the steaks here are cooked to perfection! There are many cuts to choose from and on Saturday’s they have a prime rib special. Last Saturday was my birthday, so of course I went all out and got my steak (my favorite, The Delmonico) Oscar style. Oscar style is hollandaise sauce, lump crab meat and a few strips of asparagus. I believe they had a few other “style” options that night as well. The great thing was they didn’t over do it with the Oscar. Just the right amount of topping to get the flavor without overpowering the steak.

Probably my favorite item on the entire menu is the Fettuccini Fruitta de Mar. I’ve ordered it once and my Girlfriend has had it twice. It’s so good I don’t even know how to explain it… so here it is direct from the menu: “Shrimp, scallops, and crab meat sautéed in a fresh basil white wine cream sauce. Served over a bed of fettuccini.” That description should also say something about making everyone else at your table jealous that they didn’t order it.

I have never saved room for desert, but they look spectacular. They are surprisingly big (meant for sharing), and surprisingly cheap. One of the deserts consists of a giant swirly ice cream which is brought to your table and then set on fire with some sort of cooking oil.

The prices at Tony Rs are what you would expect from a fine dining experience. Steaks are around $25, Pastas around $20, with sides and starters extra. That doesn’t mean you can’t cheat a little, save some money, and still get the experience. A soup, salad, appetizer and a desert would make a great low-cost but filling meal. Smaller cuts of steak and less expensive pastas can be found as well. When your eating such rich and delicious foods anyway, you really don’t need a lot. Two people could easily spend over $50 each for a full course with wine, but it wouldn’t be difficult to bring that down to around $20 each and still have a great time. In the end, try not to worry about the cost, because you get your money’s worth in terms of ingredients, size of your meal, and overall experience.
