There is more to the area than Market St, and with my recent move close to Riverside I’ve explored a few new places. You may have heard of some / all of these places before, but they are new to me. This is a new blog topic where I’ll post places in the area that are off Market Street, not necessarily in Corning, maybe they don’t get a lot of publicity or are otherwise hidden, but are worth checking out. So here’s a list to get you started:

The Butterfly
The “other” place to eat at CMoG – [Lunch Hours Only]

I’ll probably get an email about this one, as I probably shouldn’t even be mentioning it. But if you ever find yourself at the Corning Museum of Glass and don’t feel like hitting up the Museum’s Cafeteria (which is pretty good, but leaning slightly towards pricey for pre-made reheated food), there’s a top secret eatery for Museum and Corning employees that has better / fresher / lower-cost options, including a salad bar and nice indoor / outdoor seating. You don’t need to show an ID, just walk right in.

The Butterfly is located by going out the Museum’s back entrance (lower level / Glass Shop area), as if you were walking towards The Studio (AKA Make your Own Glass). Turn to the right and walk towards the black building. You’ll see some outdoor seating and the entrance is in that right corner. I wouldn’t bring a family, but for 1-4 people dressed business-casual, you’ll fit right in and get a better lunch than you’ll find at the Museum’s Cafe.

UPDATE: The Butterfly’s side / direct entrance is closed from mid-fall through the winter.  Use the lobby entrance which is located in the same area, just to the left of the butterfly. Here’s a map:

Molly’s Souper Bowl
256 South Hamilton St, Painted Post, NY

A small town diner atmosphere tucked into the corner of a small business strip. They have daily soup specials, fantastic chicken wings ($5 for a Dozen on Monday nights), burgers, and sandwiches. I’ll be hitting this place up for grilled cheese & soup combo all winter.

The Liquor Factory
287 South Hamilton St, Painted Post, NY
Website

In the same strip as Molly’s Souper Bowl, this is a little liquor store with a cool industrial atmosphere and an entire room dedicated to local wines. It’s a fun place to shop; small but a good selection and they will even order items for you. According to my mother – aka expert wine purchaser – they have very reasonable to lower prices than average. They also have a free discount “club” that you can join so your purchases add up to discounts.

Sit-N-Bull Pub
107 Village Square, Painted Post, NY
Website

Near Pierri’s Central Restaurant, this is a low-key bar with better than average bar food and a sportsbar atmosphere.  A huge variety of wing flavors (Wednesday Night wing specials), lots of French fry choices (fresh cut, jumbo, curly, beer battered, skins, cheese fries, chili fries…) as well as sandwiches and burgers. The place is for sale, but it’s still open. Not sure if they plan on closing any time soon, but it’s usually quite busy and I hope the doors stay open.

Original Italian Pizza
360 Pultney St, Corning, NY

I know OIP is probably the most well known in the list, but it’s a little out of the way (but not too far), my favorite pizza in Corning (Atlas being a very close Second), and it’s located in a strip that doesn’t really have much else going for it (a medical supply store and an out-of-business Dollar Store), so it’s easy to miss. I also don’t see much advertising from them, and Google doesn’t even know they exist. In fact, just so you have it, here’s their phone # for delivery: 607-936-5080.  Also I should mention their great subs and char grilled chicken wings (or regular wings, both styles are awesome and original).
